Lemon-houses

Lemon Gardens, white pillars and walls clung to the mountains

Limonaia Al CastelThe origin of Garda lemon gardens dates back to the XIII century, when the cultivation of citrus fruits was introduced on Lake Garda. They are made of numerous pillars that support wooden beams on which are fixed axes and glass windows in order to protect the valuable plantation against possible intense winter cold. Goethe described the lemon gardens two centuries ago: “... We passed in front of Limone, which “Gardens”, laid in terraces and planted with lemons, are rich and beautiful ... "(from Italian Journey, 1786). Lemon gardens come one after the other along the west coast of Garda.
The lemon house "Pra'dela Fam," in Tignale, was recently renovated and modernized.
In the historic centre of Limone the Castel Lemon house, one of the oldest and most characteristic citrus gardens of Garda, was recently renovated.

The Villa Boghi Lemon House Museum illustrates with the help of the panels the history and characteristics of citrus fruits (open to the public every day from 9 to 21, info: Comune di Limone sul Garda, tel. 0365 954008).

Other lemon houses can be found in Gargnano, the first and largest centre of the cultivation of citrus fruits on Lake Garda, in Bezzuglio hamlet of Toscolano Maderno, in Gardone Riviera near the church of San Nicolò.
